CSRM at Enviromine SRMining in Chile
Dr. Kathryn Sturman and PhD candidate Nigel Wight attended the Gecamin-SMI co-hosted conference on Environment and Social Responsibility in Mining, held in Santiago from in November. Kathryn presented a paper on the interoperability of international standards. She also moderated a panel session on Social development and community investment. Nigel presented a paper on Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) in Chile.
 
Invited discussion with Colorado School of Mines students

In November, Prof. Deanna Kemp and A/Prof. John Owen were invited by Assistant Prof. Nicole Smith from the Department of Mining Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines to engage with a group of graduate students to talk about their recently published book, Extractive Relations. Prof. Kemp spent an hour on Skype, talking with students about the various topics canvassed in the book.

 

 

Minerals Council of Australia ECW 2017 workshop

Prof. Deanna Kemp was invited to address at the Minerals Council of Australia’s Environment and Communities Workshop (2017) in Melbourne, in October. Her presentation was titled “Alternative Perspectives on Social Licence”. She also participated in a Panel discussion with representatives from Glencore, Newcrest and the Development Partnership Institute.

 

Australian Business and Human Rights dialogue

In October, Prof. Deanna Kemp attended the Australian Business and Human Rights dialogue, convened by the Australian Global Compact Network and the Australian Human Rights Commission. She facilitated a session on human rights impact, and participated in a panel on embedding human rights due diligence with Newcrest, and ANZ Bank, facilitated by Alison Ewings, from Regnan.

 

EITI Beneficial Ownership Conference

Dr. Kathryn Sturman attended the EITI Beneficial Ownership Conference held in Jakarta in October. She chaired a high-level panel discussion, which included the Mining Minister of Cameroon, Vice-President of Freeport-McMoran and other industry and civil society speakers.

Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development

As a member of the Technical Committee for the UNDP Development Minerals Program, A/Prof. Carmel Bofinger attended the 2017 Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development at the Palais des Nations in Geneva in October. Read More

Paper at the Royal Anthropological Institute

A/Prof. Nick Bainton had the honour of presenting a seminar paper at the Royal Anthropological Institute, in September in the UK. His paper was titled “Making sense of resource actors and engaged anthropology in the PNG mining industry”.

 

 

 

Anthropology workshop at the University of East Anglia UK

In August, A/Prof. Nick Bainton attend a workshop on ‘Engaging Resource Actors: Tackling the Challenges of Global Resource Extraction’ at the School of International Development University of East Anglia UK. Nick presented on the current critical social challenges for the resource sector.

 

Musculoskeletal Disorders Symposium

Prof. Robin Burgess-Limerick was a keynote speaker at the second Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD) Symposium in August. The Symposium featured key international speakers, industry case studies and breakout streams to discuss the critical role leadership plays in preventing musculoskeletal disorders

 

 

 

 

Transparency International in Malaysia

In July, Dr. Kathryn Sturman participated in a workshop on corruption risks in the mining approvals process, held in Malaysia and hosted by Transparency International Australia. Her role was to report on a review of corruption risk assessment reports of 16 countries, undertaken as a member of TI Australia’s Expert Working Group on Mining for Sustainable Development.

 

 

ISEAL Alliance Annual International Conference on Sustainability Standards

Dr. Kathryn Sturman attended the ISEAL Alliance Annual International Conference on Sustainability Standards, held in Zurich, in June. She presented findings of the GIZ-funded project titled, Leveraging greater effectiveness of mineral sustainability standards: An assessment of interoperability.
