The contribution of preferential flow to water flow in spoils from coal mining

Preferential flow may cause fast transport of contaminated water and hence poses a high risk above all in mining environments. In rocky substrates which are used for rehabilitation in the Australian context the concentration of surface flow from rock surfaces which is almost non-penetrable for water to entry points for water into the substrate is pre-defining preferential flow.

Laboratory work and Numerical modelling using commercially available hydrological models will be used to try to quantify the preferential flow component and the water balance.
