Pieter is researching residual environmental risks associated with mine closure.

Pieter Swart has worked in the resources industry since 1992 in the disciplines of mine surveying and environmental management. His experience is split between South Africa and Australia in both consulting and working for large multinational resource companies, including AngloGold Ashanti, Rio Tinto and Glencore. After joining Glencore in 2009, Pieter was responsible for the environmental function of the QLD copper and zinc businesses based in Mount Isa, after which he transferred to the coal business as the QLD Environment and Community Manager in 2012. 


During his career, Pieter has participated in various industry and other organisations, namely:
- (2004 - 2005) President and Board member - South African Chapter of the International Erosion Control Association (IECA - SA)
- (2005 - 2006) Foundation committee member for the Guidelines for the Rehabilitation of Mined Land, Chamber of Mines of South Africa / Coaltech, Nov 2007
- (Feb '10 - Mar '12) Non-Executive Director - Southern Gulf Catchments (Natural Resource Management Organisation)
- (Apr '14 - Jan '18) SMI-CMLR Advisory Board Member
- (2012 ongoing) - Queensland Resources Council - Environment Committee and various Industry working groups on mine rehabilitation, financial assurance and related matters
