Plant Taxonomy, Ecology and Evolution

Uncovering variation in Ni hyperaccumulation in the tree violets (Rinorea, Violaceae) of Sabah.

The hyperaccumulation of nickel in tissue is a phenomenon known in at least 500 species of plants. Nickel hyperaccumulating plants may be either obligate (restricted to ultramafic soils) or facultative hyperaccumulators (found on both ultramafic and non-ultramafic soils).

I am studying the genus Rinorea in Sabah, with a particular focus on the taxonomy and nickel hyperaccumulation traits of the species Rinorea bengalensis. This plant was one of the first discovered nickel hyperaccumulators.
