Environmental Leadership and Performance

In her role at CWiMI, Shona is responsible for promoting environmental excellence in the minerals industry through engagement with critical research programs and coordination of a new online Mine Site Environmental Management training program aimed at equipping junior environmental personnel with the technical skills necessary to comply with environmental conditions and implement aspects of best practice environmental management.


Shona is a lawyer and public policy professional with 18 years experience in both the public and private sectors across the areas of policy, legislative analysis, standards and compliance, government and community relations, advocacy, and sustainable development. With a Masters in Environmental Law, Shona has an interest in regulation, technology and market mechanisms aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Shona is also a qualified Legal Studies and Japanese teacher. 


Shona worked for a global mining company for 9 years in the Government and Social Affairs team. She was responsible for climate change policy and regulatory issues including lobbying the Government to minimise the impact of the carbon tax and managing compliance with the carbon tax. She also trained mine site personnel on the company's internal corporate social responsibility framework and improved compliance against internal government and social affairs performance standards.
