Risk interactions and complex system behaviour
Finding and developing the critical resources needed to build a zero-carbon future by 2050 will necessarily require a rapid acceleration of the pace of exploration, permitting and mine development. This acceleration will bring with it a host of interrelated risks to both local communities and environments, to good governance, and to capital risk to the companies and investors building the mines. Research completed within this theme aims to clearly identify and characterise the risks, and importantly, to map the complex relationships between the sources of risk using methodologies such as causal network analysis and machine learning. Understanding the interplay between different sources of risk within a complex causal environment is crucial to developing policy and strategy that can minimise risk exposure to all stakeholders.
