Training and capacity building

The resources industry is undergoing rapid transformation driven by technology, environmental responsibility, and evolving social expectations. Meeting these challenges requires more than technical expertise alone— it requires capable people, strong institutions and adaptive systems.

For over 25 years, the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) at The University of Queensland has partnered with industry, government and communities to design and deliver training that builds workforce capability, leadership, and organisational resilience across the resources sector.

SMI’s training and capacity building programs are grounded in world-leading research and shaped through deep engagement with industry and policy practice.

Through structured learning pathways— including train-the-trainer models, professional development course, masterclasses and bespoke capability programs—SMI supports individuals and organisations to translate knowledge into practice and deliver lasting impact.

SMI had more than 120 online and in-person courses and over 2,000 participants in 2025.
