MISHC bringing together research in Fifth Dust and Respiratory Health Forum

The Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC) recently held the Fifth Dust and Respiratory Health Forum, bringing together experts from around the world with advancements and latest trends in the management of dust and mine dust lung diseases. Hosted at The University of Queensland (UQ), the Forum brought together experts and practitioners to share the latest advancements and trends in managing dust and mine dust lung diseases, to outline best practice and develop collaborations for future research.

Queensland Minister for Industrial Relations, The Honourable Grace Grace opened the forum outlining the importance of dust controls and procedures to keep workers safe.

“The [Annastacia] Palaszczuk Government is deeply committed to ensuring we have the highest workplace health and safety standards and we act quickly to ensure our laws and regulations keep pace with new and emerging issue," The Honourable Grace Grace said.

"To deliver effective support and treatment we need to research literature, data, and information, and right now there is very limited, as we know in this field.”

Panellists included researchers from the University of New South Wales, the University of Newcastle, the University of Illinois in Chicago, Virginia Tech, and UQ. The Forum also heard presentations from Resources Safety and Health Queensland, NSW Coal Services, BHP, B3 Mining Services and i-Med radiology.

The Sixth Dust and Respiratory Health Forum will be held on 2 November 2023.
