SMI is committed to training the next generation of industry and community leaders and offers two internationally recognised Higher Degrees by Research (HDR) – the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil).

HDR candidates at SMI undertake extensive original research guided by their supervisory team. You will be strongly connected to industry and stakeholder groups, and the importance of collaboration is reinforced.

By graduation, you will be familiar with the unique challenges associated with conducting research in, and applying research outcomes to, the minerals and mining sector.

Undertaking a Higher Degree by Research at the Sustainable Minerals Institute equips you with the skills for a successful career in the mineral industry and develops many transferable skills such as leadership, project management, critical thinking and teamwork.

2. Find a supervisor and project

Propose your own research project with a supervisor or find an available research project. Before applying, it’s essential you find an advisor who will guide and support you through your research.
