SMI HDR Memorial Awards 2025

Join us to recognise and celebrate the innovative work being undertaken by the University's Higher Degree by Research students.

The SMI Memorial Awards is a full-day program which includes presentations from the award recipients, student poster displays, an industry led panel discussion and a keynote address.

We are delighted to welcome Associate Professor Simon Michaux, Geological Survey of Finland/Geologian Tutkimuskesku to deliver the 2025 keynote. Simon has a long history with the JKMRC - spanning 18 years, first as a HDR student and then working in a research capacity on several high-profile industry funded programs including the AMIRA P843 and P843A. His current focus is on the realities of the energy transition and circular economy solutions.

The Sustainable Minerals Institute  (SMI) is fortunate to have received several bequests and donations, which enables us to support students during their research studies.

This year's awards include:

  • Michael F Young Memorial Prize established to support a research student  from SMI's Julius Kruttschnitt Research Centre (JKMRC) to travel to another university or research centre to enhance their experience.
  • Alban and Barbara Lynch Award - to support the development of an exceptional SMI student facing financial need or disadvantage.
