Speaker:  Professor Nick Cook, Group Leader - Total Deposit Knowledge, W.H. Bryan Mining & Geology Research Centre

Abstract:  Metal production is a critical component in the transition to a lower carbon economy. The Total Deposit Knowledge (TDK) group within the W.H. Bryan Mining & Geology Research Centre at SMI is tasked with 3 critical steps in maximising discovery rates, while minimising the long-term impact of the mining process. Our critical steps are “Find it” (Discovery), “Describe it” and “Predict it” (the downstream behaviour). Hear about how current research and growth plans, combined with education and training, with clear messaging will support our industry from discovery to mine closure. Are we presently operating in the best manner to achieve “resource efficiency”?

Bio:  Nick Cook's career includes periods of University research and teaching, mineral exploration and as a finance professional. Formerly the Chief Geologist for Mawson Gold and Technical Advisor for Southern Cross Gold, global roles combined ore deposit discovery with responsibility for international collaborative industry-government-university research projects and as an industry supervisor for PhD, Masters and Honours projects (Finland, UK and Australia). This was in addition to providing training for internal and external geologists.
