Speaker: Ana Chiquini

Abstract: Mining has long relied on deterministic Mineral Resource models: single, fixed estimates that evolve as new data becomes available. A single estimate does not represent the reality of Mineral Resource uncertainty, arising from heterogeneity in mineral deposits that is never fully resolved by drill data. It’s time to move beyond deterministic models and adopt a more informed approach to Mineral Resource estimation. This seminar will highlight the need for probabilistic Mineral Resource models, which quantify uncertainty and provide a more realistic view of mineral deposits, resulting in improved risk management, enhanced decision-making, and more resilient mining operations.

Bio: Ana Chiquini is a Chartered Professional (Geology) with a diverse understanding of the mining industry, developed through work across various commodities and deposit types in the Americas and Asia-Pacific. As a leader in geostatistical and resource modelling, Ana brings her expertise to the forefront of innovation. With a Master's Degree in Geostatistics from the University of Alberta, Canada, Ana has a robust background in Mineral Resource evaluation, disclosure, and management. Her passion lies in advancing best practices within the industry and, through her role, aims to push best practices in resource modelling forward and drive continuous improvement.

About JKMRC Friday Seminars 2025

Welcome to the 2025 Series of the JKMRC Friday Seminars.  The list of presentations will aim to cover a range of topics related to the minerals sector from decision making in exploration, new mineral processing technologies, social licence to operate and mine closure.

The JKMRC Friday Seminars will be presented often in person, at the Indooroopilly Mine Site Lecture Theatre, and also as a webinar.  Registration for the webinar is required and can be made via the registration link in each seminar overview.

A large number of past webinars can be accessed on the SMI website: https://smi.uq.edu.au/webinars
