Assessing climate change physical risks – what’s new?
Speaker: Professor Neil McIntyre
Abstract: Climate-related physical risks to mining projects include risks arising from floods, droughts, storms, heatwaves and fires. Increasing awareness of climate-related risks and new disclosure standards mean that many mining companies are investing, or will soon need to invest, in climate-related risk analysis. With a focus on water risks, this seminar will overview the disclosure requirements, the nature of risk, the challenges of data, what good practice guidance exists, good practice examples, and lessons that can learned from other sectors. The seminar will conclude on the role of SMI in helping the mining sector manage its climate-related physical risks.
Bio: Neil is Professor of Hydrology and Water Resources at The University of Queensland. He has a BEng in Civil Engineering from Edinburgh University, and an MSc in Environmental Engineering and PhD in water quality modelling from Imperial College. His expertise includes surface water hydrology, water security assessments, and impacts of land use and climate change on hydrology and water quality. Since 2013 he has worked in SMI, focussing on water resources in mining regions. He also teaches hydrology, design and environmental engineering in UQ’s School of Civil Engineering.
