Dr R. Anthony (Tony) Hodge
Visiting Professorial Fellow / Sustainable Minerals Institute

Dr Hodge is at The University of Queensland’s Sustainable Minerals Institute until mid-December. From 2008 – 2015 he served as President of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), a collaborative of many of the largest mining companies in the world. ICMM’s mandate is to serve as a change agent to improve environmental and social performance within the context of sustainability and sustainable development. He has had a rich career in and around the mining industry for many years and has written and lectured broadly on practical application of sustainability ideas.

Dr Hodge will review his 7 years as head of an organisation dedicated to bringing positive change to the mining industry. He will draw lessons and insights, emphasising that successful positive change is dependent on a high degree of empathy and commitment to relationship building (up, laterally, and down) whether the focus be in one’s personal life, within a company, or at the interface between company and society. He will relate this message to the challenge of nesting highly technical aspects of engineering with social values.
