Find us at the World Mining Congress 2023

Thousands of domestic and international delegates will descend on Brisbane next month as the World Mining Congress (WMC) comes to Australia for the first time.

The WMC, first held in 1958, provides a forum for mining industry stakeholders – from mining industry executives and investors to government representatives and researchers – to discuss challenges and opportunities and share the latest research, technology and best practice.

Researchers from across The University of Queensland (UQ) are set to play an important part in exploring this year’s theme, Resourcing Tomorrow: Creating Value for Society, as they engage with attendees through over 90 oral and poster presentations.

The Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) has been heavily involved with the organising committee and our researchers are presenting across a range of streams, including autonomous systems, health, safety and wellbeing, geoscience and discovery, social performance and governance, new mining frontiers, mine science and engineering, future workforce and education, processing and refining and environmental sustainability.

Keynote presentations to watch out for: on Tuesday 27 June include Professor Jolanda Jetten (School of Psychology) on Leadership for Highly Reliable Organisations, and Professor Robin Burgess-Limerick (SMI Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre) speaking on Participatory ergonomics in action.

On Thursday 29 June Professor Stephen Wilson (School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering) will deliver a keynote titled Serious about Decarbonisation: be up-to-date with Nuclear Energy while UQ Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Debbie Terry will deliver a plenary address.

In addition to the comprehensive line-up of presentations they will deliver, SMI staff and researchers will also be ready and eager to talk to you at the UQ booth in the exhibition hall.

The Congress is an opportunity to showcase some of the innovative work underway at SMI and we look forward to starting new conversations and building partnerships.
