Abstract

This seminar will present research and process development on critical metals recovery from mine waste with a paradigm shift: turning impurities into saleable products. Several industry-driven projects with technology readiness level from bench scale to pilot plant scale will be provided as below:
Mud2Products: Bauxite Residue Utilization Clay2Products: High Purity Zeolites & Rare Earth Extraction
Slag2Products: Value-added Products from Titanium-bearing Steel Slag Invisible
Gold Recovery: Manipulating Iron Precipitation for refractory Gold sulfides
Cavern Salt Recovery: Potassium Resource Extraction from Basin Boree Salt

Bio

Dr Peng is Group Leader of Sustainable Extraction Engineering Laboratory (SEE Lab) and Senior Research Fellow in the School of Chemical Engineering at The University of Queensland (UQ). Dr Peng is CI for the national grants (ARC DP; ARC LIEF grant, ARC Research Hub for PVRS and ARC Training Centre for the Global Hydrogen Economy), Leading CI for three RTCM Trailblazer Projects and other industry-funded projects from Rio Tinto, Newcrest, Origin energy and Maaden. His research focuses on critical metals recovery from mine waste and urban mining on solar panel and lithium battery recycling. Dr Peng has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications including 80 journal papers; 11 book chapters/edited books, 8 conference proceedings, 6 patents (4 licensed to the industry partners).

Welcome to the 2026 Series of the JKMRC Friday Seminars.  The list of presentations will aim to cover a range of topics related to the minerals sector from decision making in exploration, new mineral processing technologies, social licence to operate and mine closure.
