Pathways for Aboriginal socio-economic development in the Beetaloo: Voices from the region

20 October 2026

Exploring how economic opportunities from major developments in the Beetaloo region of the Northern Territory can support the aspirations, values and priorities of Aboriginal communities

As the pace and scale of resource exploration, pastoral expansion, and infrastructure projects accelerate across the Beetaloo region of the Northern Territory, new research explores what this rapid development means for the Aboriginal communities who live there – and how their voices, priorities and authority can remain central to decisions about the region’s future.

The research, funded through CSIRO’s Gas Industry Social and Environmental Research Alliance (GISERA) and conducted by researchers at The University of Queensland (UQ), explored pathways for Aboriginal socio-economic development across a region undergoing profound change.

The research team comprised Associate Professor Sarah Holcombe, project co-lead and lead author; Associate Professor Kathy Witt, project co-lead and co-author, and Julia Keenan, co-author. The final report is titled Pathways for Aboriginal socio-economic development in the Beetaloo: Voices from the region.
