HDR Opportunities at CWiMI
CWiMI provides opportunities for students wanting to enrol in an Honours, Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program.
Our centre has an environmental focus and the research topics available relate to the sustainable management of water resources in the mining and energy sectors. Our research topics address current industry questions across multiple fields including hydrology, hydrogeology, soil hydrology, geochemistry, water resource engineering, spatial science, data science, climate science, and aquatic ecology. Under the guidance of our academic researchers, students are able to make significant contributions to sustainability in mining specialising in water resources.
Academic entry requirements
The MPhil and PhD programs have academic entry requirements which include:
- Holding an approved degree in a field relevant to your proposed research.
- Meeting the grade point average requirements for the approved degree.
- Some relevant experience in research or project work (including through an approved degree).
- Meeting the English language requirements.

Scholarships
Students applying for a full time MPhil and PhD with CWiMI will need to hold a tuition fee and living stipend scholarship, unless the student is self-funded, or funding is available from another source. Students that meet the academic entry requirements can apply for a scholarship.
There are a range of different types of scholarships available. Most students will apply for a UQ Graduate School Scholarship. If you are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student, there are specific scholarships for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students that you can apply for.
The timing for scholarship applications will depend on the type of scholarship you are applying for and whether you are a domestic student or an international student.
Scholarship applications are assessed based on key criteria, including your academic performance, evidence of your research capability, and the quality of your proposed research project.
Students applying to do an MPhil or PhD with CWiMI can nominate to develop their own research project focussed on water resources in the minerals industry or can apply to work on one of the CWiMI projects below.
The scholarship application will ask you to nominate a supervisor: you can contact the CWiMI researchers below to seek their support and agree to be a supervisor.
