Shazia Imam is a PhD candidate at the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM), Sustainable Minerals Institute, as part of the University of Queensland-IIT Delhi Academy of Research (UQIDAR). Her PhD project examines the idea of just transitions, where she investigates the socio-political and economic impacts of coal phase-out in India and Australia. By employing qualitative and quantitative approaches, Shazia's research seeks to provide a comprehensive analysis of these transitions. Her Advisory team includes Vigya Sharma (CSRM) and Rohit Chandra (IIT Delhi).

Shazia holds a master's degree in Economics with distinction from Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi, and a bachelor's degree in Economics with a subsidiary specialisation in Mathematics and Statistics from Aligarh Muslin University, India. Having grown up in and around Jharkhand, a key coal mining region, Shazia's thinking on India’s just transitions is shaped by her lived experience and understanding of the wider coal landscape.
