James (Jim) Joy
James (Jim) Joy has worked for over 30 years in the development of operational risk management.
From 1998 to 2011, Jim was the inaugural Professor and Director of the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC) at the University of Queensland in Australia. His research involves advancing the minerals industry approaches to managing risk, addressing the quality of mining risk assessment and risk management, improving human error consideration in decision-making, and risk management regulation/governance.
Jim developed a network of overseas universities to deliver risk management education programs for companies such as Anglo American, Newmont, Murray and Roberts, Anglo Gold Ashanti, DeBeers, Exxaro, Yancoal and others. He also facilitated a unique project involving many global mining companies, engaging with major mining equipment producers such as Caterpillar, Komatsu, Sandvik and others to improve equipment operability and maintainability.
Jim has had corporate advisory roles for WMC, BHP Billiton and Xstrata. From 2007 to 2011 he was the Anglo-American Chair of Safety Risk Management, which involved developing their global HSE risk management education initiatives, including the global university network.
Jim's work has been recognised by the AusIMM (2004 Occupational Health and Safety Award), the UK Institute of Chemical Engineers (2009 IChemE Innovation and Excellence Award in Health and Safety), the International Mining Technology Hall of Fame (inducted at SME 2015) and the Canadian Institute of Mining Safety Leadership Medal (2018).
Recent work has included being the primary author of the 2015 ICMM guide on Critical Control Management and subsequent work with several global clients on the design, application and assurance of the approach.
