Mr Douglas Thompson

Mr Douglas Thompson was appointed as CIMIC Group’s Mining and Mineral Processing Executive and Thiess’ Managing Director in August 2017. He is responsible for leading CIMIC Group’s operating companies Thiess and Sedgman. He returned to Thiess after playing a key role at CPB Contractors as Executive General Manager Queensland, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand, setting those regions up for a multi-year growth program. Douglas brings more than 20 years’ experience in coal and metalliferous mining operations globally, having previously been Thiess’ Executive General Manager, Australia & Pacific. He has a strong industry reputation for driving operational excellence and developing greater in-house capability to deliver more value to clients. He has held senior positions on major Australian and international mine sites, giving him an in-depth understanding of all facets of operational management, including significant mine expansions and upgrades. This includes leadership roles with Gold Fields Limited in South Africa. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Mining) with Honours and a National Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, and has completed an International Executive Development Program with the University of Cambridge and the University of Witwatersrand.
