Ian Satchwell advises business, government and NGOs on minerals and infrastructure policy, practices and governance to facilitate investment and deliver outcomes aligned with sustainable development goals. Ian has worked closely with SMI since 2011, when he took up the role of Director of the International Mining for Development Centre.  This centre was a UQ-UWA joint venture funded by the Australian Government to build capacity in mining governance in developing economies in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Ian has served on the boards of not-for-profit organisations including Committee for Economic Development of Australia, Australia Indonesia Business Council and Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia, and internationally on committees including the Sustainable Business Network, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, and the Advisory Council of the Canadian International Resources and Development Institute. He is currently a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Canadian Northern Corridor Research Program at the University of Calgary, Canada.

For much of his career, Ian was a senior executive in minerals and energy industry bodies, and a partner in an Australian consulting firm specialising in economics, policy and strategy.
