Adjunct Professor Ian Satchwell

Ian Satchwell has worked closely with SMI since 2011, when he took up the role of Director of the International Mining for Development Centre.  This centre was a UQ-UWA joint venture funded by the Australian Government over four years to build capacity in mining governance in developing economies in Asia, Africa and Latin America. In addition to his Adjunct Professorship, Ian is an Affiliate of the Global Centre for Mineral Security and a Senior Fellow at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.

Ian advises business, government and NGOs on minerals and infrastructure policy, practices and governance to facilitate investment and deliver outcomes aligned with sustainable development goals. The focus of his current research is on:

• Australia’s global investment footprint in minerals exploration, mining and processing and its role in fostering sound governance and sustainability frameworks and performance.
• Building diverse, secure and sustainable supply chains for critical minerals, and Australia’s domestic and global role.

For much of his career, Ian was a senior executive in minerals and energy industry bodies, a partner in an Australian consulting firm specialising in economics, policy and strategy, and served on boards and advisory committees of not-for-profit organisations in Australia and overseas.
