Ian Satchwell advises business, government and NGOs on trade, investment, and economic and environmental policy and governance. He is a Senior Fellow at Perth USAsia Centre, based at The University of Western Australia, and there specialises in trade and investment analysis and policy. Ian has worked closely with SMI since 2011, when he took up the role of Director of the International Mining for Development Centre.  This centre was a UQ-UWA joint venture funded by the Australian Government to build capacity in mining governance in developing economies in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Ian has served on the boards of not for profit organisations including Committee for Economic Development of Australia, Australia Indonesia Business Council and Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia, and internationally on committees including the Sustainable Business Network, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, and the Advisory Council of the Canadian International Resources and Development Institute. He is currently a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Canadian Northern Corridor Research Program at the University of Calgary, Canada.

For much of his career, Ian was a senior executive in minerals and energy industry bodies, and a partner in an Australian consulting firm specialising in economics, policy and strategy.
