Evaporation Estimation of Mine Pits Post Mine Closure

Mount Isa Mines Closure: Evaluation of Final Void Water Balance

Glencore (Mount Isa Mines) has a need to refine the water balance and groundwater model for a open cut pit to take in account the highly variable climate in the Northwest Queensland region and the uncertainty involved in estimation of future extremes. In order to inform any planning and engineering design needed to be developed to ensure mine open cut pit does not exceed the pre mining groundwater level, the refined model may need to consider the optimisation of surface water catchments reporting to mine open cut pit at closure, engineering connection between voids, or a pump and treat option.

This research project is being undertaken on behalf of Mount Isa Mines to support the evaluation of the potential risk for the open cut pit to exceed the pre-mining water table under post-closure conditions and therefore allowing offsite migration of contaminants.
