Kurt Aasly is currently on sabbattical from his position as Associate Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) at the Department of Geoscience and Petroleum, Trondheim, Norway. His main field of research is within process mineralogy and geometallurgy of industrial minerals and iron oxides.  Additionall, Kurt is also involved in technology projects related to deep sea mining on the Atlantic Mid Ocean Ridge as project manager.

Kurt has recently been involved in developing a national research infrastructure Norwegian Laboratory for Mineral and Materials Characterization (MiMaC), where he is responsible for establishing a mineral characterisation lab equipped with e.g. one JEOL JXF-8530F PLUS Electron Probe Micro Analyser and one Zeiss Sigma 300 FE with Mineralogic Mining.

Kurt received his MSc degree in Resource Geology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway, in 2000, and PhD degree also in Resource Geology from NTNU, in 2008.

Kurt has experience as an exploration geologist for base metals and Au in Norway and at Greenland. After finishing his PhD, he continued his work related to quartz within Elkem before re-joining NTNU as an Associate Professor in 2012.

Kurt will spend his sabbatical as a Visiting academic in the period from mid-July 2019 to the beginning of July 2020. The research carried out in this period will be related to process mineralogy and geometallurgy. Kurt is interested in connecting with researchers and students working on projects within any of these topics.
