From research to reality: JKMRC students visit mine site

The Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre’s revolutionary risk management program RISKGATE will be adapted for the underground coal mining industry in the United States, after funding was awarded by the Alpha Foundation for the Improvement of Mine Safety and Health.

More than $US650,000 was awarded to The University of Queensland, Virginia Tech and the University of New South Wales over three years to improve risk assessments in the US mining industry.

The consortium will evaluate the existing body of knowledge around RISKGATE, directly apply the program where it can, and adjust the approach as required to compensate for cultural and operational differences between Australia and the US.

“This is tremendous recognition of the impact that the RISKGATE program has had in Australia. The Alpha Foundation’s first priority is to award funding to American universities so it is coup for MISHC to have been successful,” MISHC Director Professor David Cliff said.
