MIWATCH welcomes Sibele Nascimento

The MIWATCH Group are pleased to welcome new member Sibele Nascimento, to the team as a Research Officer. Sibele is a Mining and Resources Engineer specialised in sampling, characterisation, geometallurgy and processing of mine waste deposits. She will be working on projects focused on reprocessing of mine wastes.

Sibele graduated with a Bachelor of Science as Mining engineer from the Federal University of Ouro Preto (2011). Later, she graduated from the EMerald Erasmus Mundus Masters, a program focused on characterisation, processing and geometallurgy of georesources (2016). During this time, she studied at Université de Liège (Belgium), École Nationale Supérieure de Géologie in Nancy (France), Luleå University of Technology (Sweden), and completed her Master of Science thesis at the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (Germany).

Sibele undertook her PhD as part of the Australian Research Council's Industrial Transformation Research Hub for Transforming the Mining Value Chain (TMVC) under the Centre for Ore Deposit and Earth Sciences (CODES) at the University of Tasmania. During her PhD, Sibele investigated the long-term hydrochemical and environmental impacts of mine waste disposal in the Queen-King River system, which represents one of the worse acid mine drainage (AMD) cases in Australia. She also studied the mineralogy, geochemistry and geophysics properties of tailings stored at the King River delta to evaluate AMD potential of the tailings and possible sources of valuable metals that could be metallurgically recovered from this material.

Sibele will be heavily involved in leading MIWATCH’s metallurgical programs for mine waste valorisation and applications of geophysics to mine waste sites across Queensland and beyond. However, after being stuck overseas during the pandemic, we are keen to take Sibele to the field and let her get stuck in!
