MIWATCH opportunities for BSc research students

Dr Kristy Guerin discusses the opportunities and what undergraduate Bachelor of Science students can expect when undertaking their research module with MIWATCH.

Are you considering honours after graduating but not sure if research is for you? Maybe you need one more elective, but don’t know what to take? SCIE3230 is the perfect unit for you! Through this program, you can conduct your own research project and be supported by a team of experts in the subject area, as well as develop valuable research skills like field and lab work, analysis, interpretation of data, and presentation of your findings.

Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking to Dipanshu Sharma, a student wo took part in the SCIE3230 program with MIWATCH in 2022. Dipanshu (supervised by Associate Professor Anita Parbhakar-Fox, Dr Laura Jackson and Dr Kamini Bhowany) completed a project on the geoenvironmental assessment of mine tailings from Tasmania.

Dipanshu’s project involved extensive laboratory work where she applied a variety of techniques to predict the acid and metalliferous drainage potential of the tailings. She was kind enough to share her experience working with the MIWATCH team.

"SCIE3230 gave me a chance to work on an engaging project over the course of one semester. My project revolved around mine waste so I worked with the MIWATCH team at SMI. At first I was nervous because I knew nothing about mine waste but the team was super supportive and no question was ever too silly to ask. The team has so many projects going on so there’s so many opportunities to get involved! It’s a rewarding experience that I’d recommend to everyone!" – Dipanshu Sharma

It is clear that Dipanshu had a wonderful experience working with the MIWATCH team and that she learned a lot over the course of the semester. We also enjoyed working with her!

If you are looking for an opportunity that will help you gain new skills and knowledge, then SCIE3230 is definitely the way to go! In this course, you will have the chance to complete a research project where you can acquire valuable skills you can use in your geoscience career – be it a job in industry or further study – and discover rewarding experiences as you go through the research process.

Our team at MIWATCH has several projects in the mine waste space that we are looking for students to work on. If you want to know more about our current work, check out our website for information. If you are interested in a project, let us know your area of interest and we will try to find an option that suits you.
