UQ-SMI Alumni and Community Reception
On Thursday 13 July 2017 Mr Charlie Sartain, SMI Advisory Board Chair and UQ Senator, hosted our UQ-SMI Alumni and Community Reception. The event was well attended with over 110 acceptances and, by all accounts, it was a very successful and enjoyable evening.
At the event SMI Director, Professor Neville Plint, introduced our five new cross-cutting programs:
- Complex Orebodies… accessing the mines of the future;
- Mining Life Cycle… transforming perspectives on waste across the life of the mine;
- Mineral Governance and Organization… integrated approaches towards sustainable development;
- The Digital Mine… Unlocking the value of digital technologies through translating data to knowledge; and
- Operational Excellence… turning problems into opportunities.
You can read more about these and other SMI initiatives on our new website at https://smi.uq.edu.au/programs. The evening also provided an opportunity for SMI’s Centre Directors Professor Alice Clark, Professor Deanna Kemp and Professor David Mulligan to highlight the discipline strength that exists within our six Centres.
Our 2016 Annual report, which summarises the achievements and work programs of our people at SMI over the past year, was also released on July 13.
We heard the three-minute thesis (3MT) presentations from UQ-SMI’s Higher Degree by Researchers 3MT finalists who will now proceed to the All-Institutes final, hosted by UQ-SMI on Thursday 3 August. Our finalists were:
- Gemma Bloomfield, Improving groundwater recharge estimates for a secure water future (Winner);
- Pia Lois, Linking rock characteristics with its breakage properties (Runner-up); and
- Gern Logrosa, Communicating risks that matter: Artisanal and small-scale mining (People’s choice).
Finally, Extractive Relations: Countervailing Power and the Global Mining Industry, a book co-authored by two senior SMI-CSRM researchers with deep experience in the industry, Professor Deanna Kemp and Associate Professor John Owen, was introduced by Adjunct Professor Christine Charles.
UQ-SMI looks forward to welcoming you to future Alumni and Community events.
