Speaker: Martin Lynch

Abstract: Over the past 50 years, the volume of copper displaced by substitute materials has been roughly equivalent to the volume added through new mine production. This highlights substitution as a major contributor to meeting global copper demand. There remains significant potential for further substitution. In 2023, approximately 60% of copper consumption could have been replaced by alternative materials without compromising product functionality, reliability, or manufacturing costs. Consequently, the widely anticipated global copper shortage is unlikely to materialize. As has historically been the case, copper will continue to be replaced by suitable substitutes where feasible.

Bio: Martin is currently pursuing a PhD at the Sustainable Minerals Institute, focusing on the topic of “Substitutes for Copper,” under the supervision of Professor Rick Valenta. He is retired, with a professional background that includes 15 years as the owner and manager of a renewable energy business, and 25 years in various roles within the mining industry. Martin is the author of Mining in World History published in October 2004.
