Speaker: Maryam Esmaeili

Abstract:

The seminar will focus on research aims to advance automated fracture detection and outcrop characterisation for geohazard assessment, by integrating innovative imaging and modelling techniques. The workflow consists of three main steps. First, fractures are automatically identified and characterised from 2D images using the OpenFraQ algorithm on data captured by UAVs, DSLR cameras, and orthophotos derived from 3D models, enabling efficient analysis in hard-to-reach locations. Next, these detected fracture features are mapped onto 3D outcrop models through photogrammetry, improving the spatial accuracy and visualisation of fracture networks. Finally, the integrated dataset enables comprehensive outcrop characterisation, including quantitative analysis of 2D fracture properties, fractal characterisation to examine geometric complexity and roughness, and 3D segmentation for detailed structural interpretation.

Bio:

Maryam Esmaeili is an engineer who leverages engineering and geological tools to study ground deformation hazards. Her research integrates remote sensing, geotechnical, and geological principles for risk assessment. Maryam holds a BSc and MSc in Mining Engineering from Isfahan University of Technology (Iran). She is currently pursuing a Research Fellowship in Earth and Planetary Science at the University of Florence, funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. This builds on her expertise in remote sensing, geology, geoinformatics, and programming.

About JKMRC Friday Seminars 2026

Welcome to the 2026 Series of the JKMRC Friday Seminars.  The list of presentations will aim to cover a range of topics related to the minerals sector from decision making in exploration, new mineral processing technologies, social licence to operate and mine closure.

The JKMRC Friday Seminars will be presented often in person, at the Indooroopilly Mine Site Lecture Theatre, and also as a webinar.  Registration for the webinar is required and can be made via the registration link in each seminar overview.

A large number of past webinars can be accessed on the SMI website: https://smi.uq.edu.au/webinars
