Associate Professor James Vaughan is head of the Hydrometallurgy Research Group at the University of Queensland, within the School of Chemical Engineering. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering at McGill University followed by Master of Applied Science and PhD degrees in Materials Engineering at The University of British Columbia. Before joining UQ, James gained valuable experience as a research engineer in industry working for Placer Dome and BHP. James is currently a Chief Investigator on the ARC Research Hub for Australian Copper-Uranium.

Iron oxide copper gold uranium ore is an important source of metal for Australia. Processing of IOCG-U ore is complex due to sequential separations resulting in multiple products and the need to carefully consider the deportment of radioactive elements. ‘For the process to be effective, geologists mineral processors pyro and hydro-metallurgists must work together.’
