Minerals Industry Safety
and Health Centre
The Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC) improves the health and safety of the industry by delivering excellent risk management education, impactful research, and consultancy services.
The Centre creates impact by:
- conducting research in occupational safety and health, risk management and human factors
- integrating the results of its research into postgraduate and continuing education programs in safety and health risk management
- delivering education to the minerals industry
- moving research into practice by providing consultancy services to assist industry.
Established in 1998, the Centre’s people have a wide range of expertise and experience. SMI was established in 2001 and then brought the Centre under its umbrella.
Their backgrounds collectively cover all topics within occupational safety and health related disciplines.
This includes:
- risk management—principal hazard management and emergency response, risk management tools and techniques
- human factors
- occupational health—e.g. chemicals, dust and vibration
- psychology, fatigue and stress
- physiotherapy and ergonomics.
