SMI ICE Chile Executive Director Dr Doug Aitken recently delivered the opening address at the Echoes of Mining Summit hosted by El Mercurio newspaper and broadcast by EmolTV.
The core themes of Dr Aitken’s presentation focused on integration, innovation and inclusion to ensure a more sustainable future for this industry.
“In the last decade we have experienced several disasters in terms of tailings, fatal accidents, conflicts related to the use of water, drying of salt flats and wetlands, and dust production... all industry practices that come into conflict with the powerful global environmental movement," he claimed.
“These are worrying signs.”
The audience which included the Chilean Minister of Mining and the executive leadership of most of Chile’s major mining groups, was a great opportunity to present the SMI vision of integration, innovation and inclusion to improve the mining industry.

This is the latest in a number of important developments for SMI ICE Chile which recently received a one-year extension to its Chilean government funding from ANID (Agencia Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo). This will provide the Centre with substantial further resources to continue in its quest to have a positive impact on the sustainability of the Chilean Mining Industry.
SMI and SMI ICE Chile was also recently announced as a finalist in the 2024 Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards in the Resources and Energy Category for its work providing sustainability solutions in the Chilean market. The winners will be announced at an event in Brisbane on 4 September.
