Tira Foran supports and leads interdisciplinary teams to address challenges where governance intersects with natural resource consumption and development. This has included 6 research projects addressing water, energy, and/or food security in 8 Asian and African countries since 2010. Since 2021 he has focused on supporting transitions in regions engaging in critical minerals development, and post-mining land use. In 2025, Tira helped the Australian science institute CSIRO convene its first 'Roundtables on Indigenous Partnerships in Critical Minerals' where 47 (majority First Nations) participants expressed concerns and aspirations in relation to critical minerals development on Country. In 2025, Tira received the A New Way Forward Award from CRC TiME (Transitions in Mining Economies) for enabling multi-stakeholder visioning of post-mining land use in Latrobe Valley, Victoria. He has previously supervised two PhD students, and is co-leading the 2026 - 2028 project A framework (‘roadmap’) to support policy innovation focussed on transition of mine land, assets and waste for positive outcomes funded by CRC TiME.
