This project leverages the extensive MIWATCH mine waste database to identify and rank legacy mine waste sites with elevated pyrite potential across the state.

Sulphuric acid is a critical input for mining-related operations across Queensland, yet supply disruptions and rising demand are creating significant pressure on supply.

In 2024, the Queensland Government engaged CRU International and Core Resources to study sulphuric acid supply and demand in the Northwest and Northeast Minerals Provinces, highlighting that pyrite resources require further work.

This project leverages the extensive MIWATCH mine waste database to identify and rank legacy mine waste sites with elevated pyrite potential across the state.

By combining existing mineralogical and geochemical data with targeted field assessments, the project aims to produce first-pass pyrite resource estimates and a techno-economic evaluation of sulphuric acid production potential.

Outcomes are expected to support strategic government decision-making, unlock pyrite resource opportunities from legacy mine waste sites, and open new pathways for strengthening Queensland's sulphuric acid supply chain.
