SMI hosted a visiting delegation from the National Assembly of Lao PDR on 1 March, briefing them on social and environmental aspects of mining sustainability. The event was part of a study tour sponsored by the Australian DFAT
The deligation heard from SMI experts on: The Australian context for mineral developments – overall extent and significance of sector, aluminium and gold/copper examples, Mine rehab and closure – Australian practice, closure challenges, Governance – EITI and other multilateral frameworks, Aluminium stewardship initiative, social closure initiative and Community economic development – highlight work in Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar.
