Michael Duvenhage joined ICMM in August 2022 and serves as Manager, Innovation. He leads a portfolio of work focused on the prevention of fatalities and serious injuries across ICMM’s global membership, with particular emphasis on critical risk management, leading indicators, vehicle interaction, diesel particulate matter (DPM), and psychological health and safety.

In his role, Michael works closely with member companies, technical working groups and external partners to strengthen practical implementation of ICMM guidance. He oversees the development and refresh of good practice guidance, supports data-driven benchmarking and performance analysis, and facilitates peer learning through global workshops and forums. Michael's work aims to improve the effectiveness of critical controls, strengthen governance and verification processes, and enhance the use of leading indicators to drive proactive risk management.

Prior to joining ICMM, Michael gained extensive operational experience within the mining industry, working across copper, zinc and uranium operations in Southern and Central Africa. His background includes site-based health and safety leadership, risk management, contractor oversight, and implementation of safety management systems in complex, high-hazard environments. This operational grounding informs his practical approach to global guidance and member engagement.

Michael holds an International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety from NEBOSH and a Postgraduate Certificate in Health, Safety and Risk Management from Robert Gordon University, Scotland.
