Katerina is a Research Fellow working on hyperspectral mineral data processing and interpretation.

Katerina Savinova is a specialist with over 15 years experience in exploration for world-class mineral deposits and applications of the hyperspectral remote sensing techniques on geological projects, across the entire resource value chain.

Katerina began her career as an exploration geologist at Cameco Corporation in 2006 - one of the largest uranium producing companies - based out of the headquarters office in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She worked in central and northern Canada before relocating to Australia in 2012 to apply her expertise to greenfield and brownfield sites.  Katerina's interest in hyperspectral data started with alteration characterisation studies and integration of geochemical data.  She continued her journey at Corescan Pty Ltd from 2014 – 2020 where she worked in a team developing high-resolution hyperspectral imaging techniques and focusing on hyperspectral data acquisition, imaging, interpretation and presentation.

Katerina commenced with SMI's W.H. Bryan Mining Geology Research Centre in 2020, providing technical assistance on hyperspectral data processing and interpretation on a variety of projects, ranging from mineral alteration characterisation to geometallurgical and textural definition studies, to mine waste characterisation and acid-rock drainage mitigation.

Katerina's areas of specialisation and expertise are:

  • Remote sensing and hyperspectral mineral data acquisition, mapping, analysis and interpretation
  • Applied research in reflectance spectroscopy
  • Extensive knowledge of a variety of geological environments and mineral deposit settings, including Au-Ag epithermal, unconformity-associated uranium, roll-front and calcrete uranium, orogenic gold, Cu-Au-Mo porphyry, skarn, as well as IOCG
  • Experience working with a large variety of mineral commodities such as Au-Ag, U, Cu, Mo, REEs, V, Li, diamonds, emeralds and graphite
  • Mineralogy and mineral behaviour; image processing and data analytics.
