Dr Grant Ballantyne 2017 winner of the Minerals Engineering International Young Person's Award

Dr Grant Ballantyne is the recipient of the 2017 Minerals Engineering International Young Person’s Award which was presented at the MEI Comminution ’18 Conference in Cape Town.

It is with great pleasure that we advise that SMI-JKMRC Dr Grant Ballantyne is the recipient of the 2017 Minerals Engineering International Young Person’s Award.This award is bestowed upon an outstanding candidate under the age of 35.

Grant’s nomination was supported by an international group of eminent figures from academia and industry including; Emeritus Professor Tim Napier-Munn (UQ), Prof Dee Bradshaw (University of Cape Town), Prof Bern Klein (University of British Columbia Vancouver), Prof Luis Marcelo Tavares (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), Joe Pease (CEEC International Brisbane), Dr Nick Clarke (Anglo Gold Ashanti), Dr Peter Radziszewski (Metso Grinding Media Solutions Montreal), Evert Lessing (Weir Minerals Sydney), and Aidan Giblett (Newmont Mining Corp Perth).

Grant is an accomplished and enthusiastic member of the international mineral engineering community with exceptional research achievements. He is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Queensland within the Sustainable Minerals Institute at the JKMRC. Dr Ballantyne holds Bachelor of Engineering with First Class Honours and a PhD in the field of Mineral Engineering both from UQ. Grant is the recipient of two prestigious awards, the Zinifex prize (now Oz Minerals) and the Ian Morley prize, acknowledging the outstanding quality of his thesis and his contribution to the SMI-JKMRC and its student life. He has authored 27 international conference papers, 8 refereed journal articles (6 as first author), 1 book chapter, 4 industry publications and 24 technical reports to industry. In 2017 he was invited to take on the role as Assistant Editor for the high-impact journal Minerals Engineering.

Grant is known for his innovative and engaging teaching strategies, resulting in high quality learning outcomes for both undergraduates and industry professionals. He has developed professional development courses for Sandvik Pty Ltd and leads the comminution component of the Metallurgical Engineering undergraduate program at UQ.  Recognised for his lecturing twice, by the UQ Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and IT as ‘Most Effective Teacher’ Grant was nominated by the elite cohort of students who receive the Dean’s Commendation. Grant also supervises vacation student projects, undergraduate theses and RHD students.

Dr Ballantyne collaborates with several international research groups and is an active member of the Global Comminution Collaborative. He has spent periods as a visiting scholar with research groups at Erlangen University Germany, CSIRO Melbourne and the University of Cape Town.

Grant played a principal role in the development of the internationally-supported comminution energy curve tool which is widely used by industry for energy benchmarking and the optimisation of comminution circuits.
