The Acting Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health, the Coal Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee and the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee have initiated this project in response to calls to update the competency requirements for supervisors in the Queensland mining industry
This project aims to identify the skills and knowledge that supervisors require to perform the tasks and duties prescribed to them under Queensland’s mining safety and health legislative framework.
This includes the competencies needed to effectively implement and monitor the mine’s safety and health management system and to manage the work of other mine workers.
How supervisors can participate
Expression of Interest (EOI) – Online interview
Participate in a confidential online interview to share your experiences and perspectives as a supervisor. Further details will be provided as part of the EOI process.
Anonymous Online Survey
A short survey focused on supervisory tasks, capability requirements and training needs.
An interactive online workshop to explore preliminary findings and discuss what “good” supervision looks like in practice.
- Date: 6 May 2026
- Time: 1:00–4:00 pm
Participation is voluntary, and input from supervisors at all levels is strongly encouraged to ensure a comprehensive and balanced understanding of supervisory competency requirements.
Aims
To ensure the competency requirements established by the Coal Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee and the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee reflect the real work of supervisors and the risks they manage every day, the committees have engaged The University of Queensland (UQ) Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC) to undertake this work.
Objectives
This project will identify the skills and knowledge required by supervisors to adequately do their
job and meet their legislated responsibilities under Queensland’s mining safety and health
legislation. It will include a training needs analysis across the knowledge areas of risk
management (for both physical and psychosocial hazards), critical control management,
emergency response, investigations, communications and leadership/management. It will also
include an assessment of nationally recognised training packages for supervisors that are
currently being reviewed/developed by AUSMASA and the Future Skills Organisation.
