Professor Maureen Hassall is Director of the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre. Her expertise crosses the fields of industrial risk management, systems/process safety engineering and human factors. Maureen works collaboratively with industry professionals to develop better human-centred risk management and safety engineering approaches that improve companies’ operational performance and competitiveness. She also develops and delivers process safety, systems safety engineering, risk management and human factors training, education and expert advice to students and to industry. Her industry-focused research is motivated by 18 years of industry experience working in a number of different countries and in a variety of roles including specialist engineering, line management, organisational change and business performance improvement roles. Specializing in enterprise risk management, he aligns risk strategies with business goals to drive performance and support organizational objectives. His expertise in critical risk and control management, along with his understanding of client and contractor dynamics, positions him as a key figure in industries such as mining, oil and gas, construction, transport and more.
Dale Temby is a PhD candidate at the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre at the University of Queensland Her research aims to improve safety outcomes for contractors in hazardous industries with evidence-based decision making. Her work focuses on how data quality and communication can decrease the likelihood and severity of safety incidents on work sites. She has presented her research at international and local conferences.
Sally Stewart currently serves as the General Manager of Safety, Health & Environment at Golding, where she oversees critical safety, health, and environmental initiatives to support the company’s operations delivering civil infrastructure, urban and mining services on the East Coast of Australia . With a wealth of expertise in operational line management within mining, risk management, and auditing, Sally has led the development of management systems, conducted both internal and external audits, and overseen HSE performance analysis and reporting. She is also highly skilled in significant incident investigations, using methodologies such as ICAM, Essential Factors, and TapRoot, and has extensive experience leading training programs across technical and safety-related subjects.
David has worked in OHS in Mining for the past thirty two years. During that time he has been involved in a number of major incident investigations and assisted governments in New Zealand, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. He has been active in providing assistance to developing countries improve their governance of mining OHS. In 2016 he was a member of the Australia India Education Council Eminent Researcher Lecture Program
Dr Stephanie MacMahon is a Teaching and Research Academic in the School of Education at The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, focusing on the Science of Learning. She is co-founder and Program Director of the UQ Learning Lab: a group of multi-disciplinary researchers, educators, and industry partners who collaborate to transform learning, teaching and training in diverse education and industry contexts through the Science of Learning. Steph has been partnering with stakeholders from the mining industry to investigate learning in the workplace, drawing on the voices and insights of frontline workers, and combining these findings with evidence from research to inform quality learning and training experiences and resources.
Jim Joy has worked for over 30 years in the development of operational risk management.
