About the Michael F Young Memorial Prize

The Michael F Young Memorial Prize is a prestigious award that recognises the outstanding achievements of higher-degree research students in mineral processing. Funded by a generous donation from Michael F. Young’s family and friends, the prize honours his legacy as a distinguished engineer and leader at Mount Isa Mines. Young dedicated his career to advancing the efficiency and sustainability of the minerals industry and was passionate about mentoring and supporting the next generation of researchers.

The prize aims to encourage excellence and innovation in mineral processing research by supporting a postgraduate student studying at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) to spend time at another university or research centre, enhancing their experience and studies through collaboration with other researchers.

Eligibility

The prize is available to higher degree by research students who are studying in the JKMRC on a topic in Mineral Processing whom their principal advisor nominates.

Basis for Award

The prize will be made to support the student who is the most outstanding nominee based on academic achievement, justification of the plan for visiting a collaborating research group in another university or research organisation and demonstration of its value to the development of the student, proper budget and cost justifications.

Nature of Prize

Up to $10,000 based on the proposed budget in the nomination application.

Other Provisions

The student should demonstrate the capacity to help advance sustainable practices in the mineral processing field by researching novel approaches in mineral processing solutions, improving the efficiency of mineral processing units and reducing the negative impacts of mining whilst still advancing this critical industry globally.
