Leaders of the energy transition are calling for a sustainable source of critical metals – is phytomining the answer?

From the humid rainforests of Malaysia and the dry bushlands of Australia to the labs of leading universities, researchers are closing in on a new method of ‘mining’ that could change how we think about metals – phytomining.
  • Environmental Geochemistry

The Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry's Environmental Geochemistry develops innovative tools for understanding and predicting geochemical processes, which underpin sustainable management of waste rock dumps, mineral processing tailings and final voids.

    CWiMI research

The Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry (CWiMI) support the sustainable management of water in the minerals and energy industries sector.
  • World-leading research into understanding hyperaccumulator plants

Hyperaccumulator plants are plants that concentrate metals in their leaves and sap - and enabling phytomining. Phytomining is a new technology to recover metals, such as nickel, from mining waste or contaminated land by growing and harvesting these plants and extracting metal from their biomass.
