Mining and Indigenous Peoples

Indigenous peoples throughout the world have complex relationships with the mining industry. They often experience mining-induced harm due to poor industry practices and lack of recognition of their collective and individual rights and cultural heritage.

CSRM researchers have extensive experience on projects which aim to understand the range of issues facing Indigenous peoples in mining contexts in Australia, Asia, North and South America, the Pacific and the Arctic.

They also conduct leading research and applied work on cultural heritage management, providing policy advice and practical guidance for communities, companies and governments.

Indigenous co-ownership

CSRM is undertaking research to explore patterns of Indigenous co-ownership in large scale renewable energy projects. Indigenous co-ownership is emerging as a potential pathway to generate shared prosperity. Our collective understanding of the motivations for, and barriers to, Indigenous participation in such projects needs to develop rapidly. This exploratory research project is a step in that direction.
