Research expertise

The Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining's (CSRM) staff and students have in-depth expert knowledge of the extractives sector, in particular the mining sector.

They have connections across different disciplines in the Sustainable Minerals Institute and The University of Queensland (UQ) and examine issues within a broader context.

The Centre's multi-disciplinary orientation, position within UQ, and ability to conduct leading edge social science research, is what sets CSRM apart in the education and extractives sector.

3. Agreements

plant

Researchers at CSRM examine mining-related agreements in their multiple forms. Since the centre was established in 2001, CSRM has evaluated the design and implementation of agreements between mining companies and states, host regions and local communities.

Our team also conducts specialist research involving indigenous peoples and complex negotiation processes. As recognised leaders in this field of applied research, CSRM has contributed to the development of leading practice guidelines through agencies such as the World Bank, Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the International Council for Minerals and Metals (ICMM).
