The 2018 UQ Mining and Resources Forum, hosted by the Sustainable Minerals Institute and the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology aims to connect the key complementary research capacity within UQ to improve communication and coordination across the University.

Dr Anthony Hodge is a Visiting Professorial Fellow. From 2008 – 2015 he served as President of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), a collaborative of many of the largest mining companies in the world. In this presentation, Dr Hodge will review his 7 years as head of an organisation dedicated to bringing positive change to the mining industry.

Safety science is a science of preventing accidents which cause human injuries and ill health, property loss and environmental damage. There is an urgent need to develop one set of uniform prevention strategies to prevent accidents and improve the efficiency and effects of prevention .

The International Council of Mining and Metals (ICMM) is an international organisation dedicated to a safe, fair and sustainable mining and metals industry. Tom Butler, the CEO and Aidan Davy, Chief Operating Officer of ICMM will present recent work exploring performance expectations on the industry.

Professor Luis Marcelo Tavares from the University of Rio de Janeiro examines the advances in modeling comminution using advanced approaches that rely on the Discrete Element Method.

Emeritus Professor David Brereton provides an overview of findings of a survey of social management practices in the Peruvian mining sector.

Dr Rodolfo Espinosa-Gomez will review tailing filtration practices in Mexican gold and silver mines to discern the key reasons for selecting tailings filtration; the most common issues during commissioning; the main advantages of the tailing filtration implementation; the quantifiable reductions in gold and silver losses; and the actual lower detoxification cost.

The Complex Orebodies Cross-Cutting program aims to bring to bear the research capabilities of the SMI and the broader UQ Mining Sector to address the range of social and environmental and technical innovations required to derive essential mineral supply from complex orebodies.

Professor Anna Littleboy will explore the relationships between minerals and society in the 21st century and examine their influence on the mining process.

Dr Kathryn Hadler from Imperial College London will give an overview of developments in froth stability optimisation - one of the great challenges in mineral processing.

This seminar will provide an overview of Australian research and innovation strategies and Korean policy on research and innovation, and research commercialisation focusing on activities between CRCs and KBRC at Korea University.

While there is an extensive – and growing – body of literature on agreement making and implementation in Australia and Canada, relatively little is known about how local level agreements (LLAs) are made and function in emerging mining economies.

Integrating innovative approaches to mine design, management and operation for delivering enhanced environmental, social and economic performance

9th Australian Acid and Metalliferous Drainage (AMD) workshop is presented by the Sustainable Minerals Institute Institute at The University of Queensland. The workshop, associated short course and site visit, will provide excellent opportunities to share with speakers and delegates, unbiased expertise and advocacy with respect to the causes, management and amelioration of the impacts of AMD and Acid Sulphate Soils.
