The University of Queensland and Université de Lorraine (France) have been collaborating intensively for over 7 years through the Sustainable Minerals Institute (UQ) and the Soil and Environment Laboratory (UL) as part of the LabEx RESSOURCES21 programme.
Jo-Anne Everingham gave a plenary address and ran a workshop at the 8th Annual Best Practice Ecological Rehabilitation of Mined Lands Conference (2018) organised by the Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment (TFI), the University of Newcastle on 12 April 2018.
Kathryn Sturman addressed a Roundtable Discussion on Extractives and the SDGs: Partnerships to progress the goals hosted by Cardno, the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network in Melbourne on 10 April 2018.
The research is expected to deliver innovative and feasible technology and methodology to rehabilitate tailings - the most costly and challenging domains at mine sites and refineries, in order to significantly improve economic and ecological sustainability of mining and minerals industries in Australia and overseas.
Dr Vlado Vivoda participated in the Inaugural Energy Policy Dialogue: Australia, Europe and the Asia-Pacific Region, held in Canberra on 26-27 March 2018.
On Thursday 8 March, SMI hosted it’s third UQ-SMI Alumni and Community Event. With over 50 attendees registered including alumni, industry representatives, SMI Advisory Board Members, members of the UQ community and staff and students past and present, the event was a success.
SMI hosted a visiting delegation from the National Assembly of Lao PDR on 1 March, briefing them on social and environmental aspects of mining sustainability. The event was part of a study tour sponsored by the Australian DFAT
